North Manitou Island

On North Manitou, several structures remain from this early 20th century community, including farms, a sawmill, lifesaving station, and the office of the Manitou Island Association. Just north on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan is Cottage Row – eight cottages and one hotel built between 1893 and 1895. One of them, the Monte Carlo Cottage, is believed to be the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Manitou Island Transit ferry service transports visitors to the island daily in peak months, returning the following day, requiring a minimum one night stay. North Manitou Island offers a true wilderness experience for backpackers.
