Port Oneida Fair
Dates: Friday and Saturday, August 13-14 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear is one of several co-sponsors of this old-fashioned Port Oneida Fair. The Park is host to two full days at seven historic sites in Port Oneida that sets the scene for over 100 demonstrations in life-skills, crafts and traditions of the late 1800s – early 1900s. From oxen mowing to buttermaking and spinning, this event is an enjoyable and relaxing, yet educational time for the whole family. Beautiful commemorative prints are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Fair. Call us if you are intersted in volunteering or demonstrating a skill/craft.

Day Trip to North Manitou Island!
Dates: Tuesday, August 24th 9:00 - 5:00 Please RSVP by email or phone

The Leelanau Historical Society and Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear are teaming up to provide an enjoyable experience visiting the island and viewing the restoration work on the Katie Shepherd Hotel porch.

Join us for a day exploring the natural beauty and learning about the island's vibrant historical contribution to Leelanau County - it's settlers, shipwrecks, commerce and mainland connections.

We will depart from Leland via Manitou Island Transit at 9:00am and arrive on the island about 10:30am. A light breakfast will be served on the dock before we depart. A box lunch and beverages will be provided during our visit to the island.

We will receive information about N. Manitou and Coast Guard Rescue history from the National Park Service Rangers.

Two hikes will be available - both of which will include tours of historic Cottage Row. During the Cottage Row tour, volunteers from Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear will give us a wonderful overview of their project restoring the Katie Shepherd Hotel (pictured above).
2+ hour hike to Lake Manitou and back. Level of difficulty: medium.
1+ hour hike in the settlement area. Level of difficulty: easy.
We will depart at 3:30pm to return to Leland by 5:00pm.

Rain / inclement weather date is Thursday, August 26.
Tickets are limited! $50 for LHS or PHSB members and $75 for non-members; cash, checks and credit cards accepted. Call 231-256-7475 or e-mail info@leelanauhistory.org for more information.
